"The thesis proposes a concrete scenario for the revival of the abandoned village of Kera, on the island of Thirasia, opposite Santorini, according to the principles of sustainable tourism focused on the small community of residents. This innovative project proposal stems from her stays in Thirasia and an Erasmus semester in Greece at the Athens Polytechnic University, co-supervisor Professor Riva Lava, which allowed for in-depth research into the island's history and ancient agricultural crops."

Pierre-Alain Croset (Thesis Supervisor)

“From Kera to Chora” investigates issues of hospitality and abandonment through a project to revitalize the village of Kera in Thirasia, Greece, an island located across from the popular island of Santorini. A previous research paper on the “Golden Age of Tourism in Greece” preceded this thesis project and formulated the initial questions that shaped the scope of interventions. This work elaborates on the previously mentioned ideas and issues, delving into Thirasia's unique relationship with tourism and contrasting it with Santorini's excessive tourism. Through visits and interactions with locals, the thesis proposes an architectural design for the abandoned village of Kera.

The project addresses the aporia of hospitality by employing architectural interventions, such as the design of a new cave-house, a winery, a restored canava as a drying cave, and thematic trails, to create sustainable, community-centered tourism, with participation and experiential tourism as the focal point. These interventions aim to respect local heritage and culture to create an experiential tourism model that benefits both locals and visitors.

The result is a holistic approach that integrates historical, cultural, and environmental considerations into a comprehensive plan for the sustainable revitalization of Thirasia as a whole.
