Among the local and regional impacts of climate change, extreme weather events—such as heatwaves—are increasing in frequency, duration, and intensity. The most affected areas are densely urbanized zones, where the urban heat island phenomenon tends to amplify the severity of heatwaves and, consequently, the associated climate risks. This study aims to identify, map, and analyze urban heat islands within the municipality of Venice. Specific objectives include mapping surface temperatures at urban and suburban scales, examining the relationship between heat islands and land use patterns, identifying thermal hotspots within the municipal area, and investigating the spatial variability of temperatures relative to the coastline. Using thermal imagery from the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites and applying geoprocessing techniques rooted in Geographic Information Science, the study geovisualizes and quantifies the intensity of urban heat islands for the selected date, July 3, 2022. The findings provide a preliminary knowledge base to support the development of localized climate adaptation and mitigation strategies addressing urban heat island effects in Venice.
