This thesis focuses on the renovation of the abandoned Casalmonferato cement plant, located in the western part of Giudecca Island in Venice. The site holds significant historical and cultural value as one of the earliest and most technologically advanced Portland cement factories in Italy, representing a key milestone in the industrial evolution of Giudecca and its contribution to regional economic development. Over the centuries, the area has undergone a series of profound transformations—from a monastic landscape to an active industrial zone, and eventually to a predominantly residential district—each phase leaving visible traces that shape the identity of the site today. The proposed project seeks to reinterpret and transform the former industrial complex into a multifunctional cultural center that both preserves and celebrates the site's layered heritage. By integrating restored industrial structures, spatial typologies, and original architectural elements into a cohesive contemporary composition, the intervention aims to reveal the narrative continuity between past and present. The design strategy emphasizes adaptive reuse, environmental sensitivity, and public accessibility, ensuring that the regenerated complex catalyzes cultural engagement and community development. Ultimately, the project aspires to reconnect all historical layers of the site, creating a vibrant and meaningful urban place that supports sustainable growth while honoring the unique character of Giudecca Island.
