VE.L.A. – Venice Learning & Artisan reimagines the former ACTV industrial area in Venice’s Castello district, transforming it into a hub for learning, craftsmanship, and economic stimulation. Inspired by the principles of the New European Bauhaus, the project integrates aesthetics, sustainability, and social inclusion to create a dynamic urban model. The initiative aspires to position Venice within the UNESCO Learning Cities network, promoting lifelong learning as a driver of social and economic development. Learning Cities foster inclusive education, encouraging collaboration among institutions, businesses, and civil society to facilitate knowledge exchange and innovation. Through urban regeneration, VE.L.A. will revitalize the site by implementing selective demolitions and targeted reconstructions, addressing structural challenges while preserving historical and cultural value. Community participation plays a central role, ensuring local stakeholders actively contribute to the design and development process. The project focuses on flexible, adaptable spaces that meet modern energy performance standards, enhancing sustainability and resilience. Additionally, the reconfiguration of pedestrian routes will transform the area into a connection hub linking the Castello, San Piero, and Sant’Elena communities, reducing their current sense of separation. A key aspect of VE.L.A. is the creation of multifunctional spaces that evolve throughout the day, accommodating diverse community needs. By celebrating traditional arts and craftsmanship, the initiative preserves Venice’s artisanal heritage while fostering innovation and new economic opportunities. Ultimately, VE.L.A. proposes an alternative urban model that strengthens social cohesion, generates sustainable employment, and contributes to Venice’s renewal, ushering in a new era of prosperity for the city.
