The project stems from the desire to convey and communicate the culture and identity of Venice through the phenomenon of Carnival. In recent years, tourist overcrowding—especially during Carnival—has been inversely proportional to the depopulation of local residents. This imbalance is so severe that it seriously threatens the identity and culture of my city. The prototype personifies Venice in the form of a bauta, a traditional Venetian Carnival mask that allowed one to exist in a state of anonymity—the very condition into which Venice paradoxically risks falling. The costume appears to emerge from a swamp, a metaphor for a situation in need of restoration. In creating the materials, it was fascinating to explore hidden corners for inspiration. The finest details were found in the most unexpected places—like the crevices of bridge steps or the stairways leading into the water, among algae, rust, moss, and stone. Even in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, beauty is sometimes found where you least expect it. This journey through Venice and its Carnival allowed me to reflect on the past and present, on the importance of memory, and on the preservation of a culture that belongs to my city. This culture is not just about fashion and costumes but also about the laws, social norms, and civic values of a city that was once respected worldwide for its high level of civilization—values that today seem at risk of being forgotten. There is still a path forward to keep Venetian tradition alive, renewing it so that it becomes creative, proactive, and courageous once again—not merely a commodity for consumption but a living community, actively engaged in its own actions and a vigilant guardian of its treasures and heritage.
